Great news for all of you who use System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager:

DPM is now enabled for Deduplication of DPM Storage!

System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager is an enterprise class backup soltuion for protecting servers and clients. DPM can be leveraged to backup data to disk, tape or Azure. It is working with a “forever incremental” backup. This means only the first backup is a full copy and after that there is only incremental data copy.

As DPM backs up multiple data sources and its combination with multiple recovery points, there is lots of redundancy in backup data. Now DPM is enabled for Deduplication of DPM Storage. So the overall Storage consumption can be reduced.

This scenario is enabled when using DPM 2012 R2 UR4 and Windows Server 2012 R2 hosts with SOFS Storage via SMB 3.0. For optimal savings, DPM should be configured as follows:
