[OSS] Linux Migration to Azure – Working or Not?
20. February 2020
Let’s have a quick look at the Migration of Linux based systems to Microsoft Azure. For sure, as we know there are a lot of supported Linux Operating Systems in Microsoft Azure. But if you are running something on-premises, how could a Linux Migration look like.
I do not want to cover any third party tool today…just focusing on the native Azure Toolings: Azure Migrate and Azure Site Recovery.
Depending on where you VM is hosted today you have different supported scenarios. Regarding support please make sure to have a look in both documentations, as Azure Migrate documentation does not state everything relevant. In the background they are still using the Recovery Services, so most of the documentation for Azure Site Recovery is also valid for Azure Migrate.
VMware based Linux Migration
Important support circumstances you should know:
if keep an eye on those, it should be no big issue to move your Linux VMs into the cloud
Hyper-V based Linux Migration
Important support circumstances you should know:
- only 64-bit Systems are supported
- VM should have Linux Integration Services (LIS) components installed
- Multiple OS-disks are not supported
- Boot disk must not be GPT
- VM NIC-Teaming not supported
- NIC with static IP not supported
- Linux Gen2 VMs not supported
especially the Gen2 issue and the non-static ip-setting makes us a hard time in Hyper-V Migration projects.
How to mitigate
the easiest ways to mitigate those issues:
- do a workload migration – start with new “cloud-born” server and move your workload over
- use a 3rd party tool for the migration
- re-configure your VM on-premises before Migration
I also hope that Microsoft is constantly improving their platform … so maybe it will be supported in the future.
Hope this helps…
